During the summer of 1998 Magnus and Gunilla Persson moved to Malmö with their family and a number of friends and co-workers. They moved here with the dream of starting a new church for a new generation in this region called the Øresund region. They had worked with Christian youth activities for many years in the organization New Generation, where they arranged ground breaking activities to present the gospel to teenagers and young people.
In February 1999 they had the first gathering in the living room of Magnus and Gunilla’s apartment at Betaniaplan 1. On August 22:nd the same year they started congregation activities and services within the framework of New Generation in Ungdomens Hus (House of the young) at Norra Skolgatan. The extensive activities of New Generation constricted the dream and the possibilities of local congregation activities in Malmö. After New Generation arranged the big and historical event “Rock the Globe” in the Globe in Stockholm on October 27th – 28th in 2000, where more than 10 000 young people attended, they decided to discontinue all activities within New Generation and go for the dream of a new church in Malmö and the Øresund region. The decisive starting point came after two separate visits to Australia in the end of 2000 and the beginning of 2001, where Magnus and Gunilla got to see and experience Hillsong Church in Sydney. They now gathered a group of almost 40 people, who in different ways had been connected to New Generation or the first group starting out in Malmö during 1999-2000, to proclaim the beginning of UNITED.
During 2001-2002 United had services in rented premises at Europaporten at Stadiongatan. In June 2002 they took over the lease on old St. Katarina church at Sallerupsvägen 87. During the period of 2002 - 2008 the congregation grew substantially and services where held up to four times each Sunday to make room for all the new visitors and members. At the same time they started activities in Copenhagen, on the other side of the Sound.
After searching hard for new premises, United’s new church premises on Vattenverksvägen 44 were inaugurated on Sunday the 31st of August 2008 with more than 900 visitors.
Today UNITED is known for communicating the gospel in a fresh and folksy package to a multitude of non churchgoers and non believers.
